|---|---|---|
| Biology | 81 | 45% |
| Chemistry | 45 | 25% |
| Physics | 36 | 20% |
| English | 9 | 5% |
| Logical Reasoning | 9 | 5% |
| Total | 180 | 100% |
How your merit is worked out
Medical college merit combines three results: 10% Matric (SSC), 40% FSc (HSSC pre-medical) and 50% MDCAT, as set out in the University of Health Sciences Lahore merit notice, which follows PMDC regulations. For example, 950 out of 1050 in Matric, 980 out of 1100 in FSc and 140 out of 180 in MDCAT gives about 9.05 + 35.64 + 38.89 = 83.57%. Closing merit changes every year and differs by college, province and category, so check last year’s merit lists for the colleges you want.
Why MDCAT is hard
- Concepts, not memory. Questions test whether you understand FSc pre-medical material, not whether you can repeat it.
- Breadth. The paper draws on the whole two-year pre-medical syllabus.
- Speed. 180 questions leave little time for each one, so you need timed practice.
- Weight on Biology. Nearly half the paper is Biology, so a weak Biology result is hard to recover.
- Pressure. Half of your merit rests on one paper on one day.
Your MDCAT preparation challenge
Biology is 45% of the paper and decides most of your score. Chemistry and Physics together are another 45%. Build concepts first, then practise MCQs every day, and remember that Matric and FSc marks already count for half of your merit.
Common MDCAT preparation mistakes
Starting too late. A weak FSc foundation. Memorising without understanding. Not practising MCQs. Poor time management. Ignoring weak subjects. Studying under stress without support. Taking no mock tests.

FAQ: MDCAT reality
Q: Is MDCAT really that hard?
A: It is designed to be selective. Medical seats are limited, and merit combines your Matric, FSc and MDCAT results, so every part matters.
Q: How long do I need to prepare?
A: It depends on your starting point. Our Solution suggests a six-month plan; a stronger FSc foundation shortens it and a weaker one lengthens it.
Q: Can I balance MDCAT with school?
A: It is difficult but possible. MDCAT usually becomes the priority, and the Solution shows how to plan your weeks.
Q: What if my score is lower than I hoped?
A: Options include retaking MDCAT in the next cycle, considering BDS or other health programmes, or another career. Each admitting university also publishes its own rules.
Q: Is coaching necessary?
A: No. Disciplined self-study with past papers and timed practice works for many students, and coaching helps some.
