Free Chapter: The Art of Saving Money, A Pakistani Teen’s Guide

Free preview: This is Chapter 1 of The Art of Saving Money: A Pakistani Teen’s Guide to Money Nobody Taught You, shown in full. The whole book has 16 chapters and is free with a free account.

It covers saving, budgeting and compound growth, with real numbers on JazzCash, inflation and credit card interest, and why starting to save at 16 beats starting at 30.

Chapter 1: The 26 Percent Problem

Here’s a number worth sitting with. According to State Bank of Pakistan data and the Standard & Poor’s Global Financial Literacy Survey, only about 26 percent of adults in Pakistan are financially literate. Roughly 36 percent are financially excluded altogether, meaning they have no meaningful access to formal banking or credit at all.

That means most adults around you, people who’ve been earning and spending money for decades, are making financial decisions without understanding the basic mechanics behind them. They borrow without knowing what the interest actually costs them over time. They don’t save because thirty years feels too abstract to plan for. They run out of money before the end of the month despite earning enough, simply because nobody ever showed them how to structure it.

This isn’t really their fault. Schools teach mathematics. They rarely teach financial mathematics, the specific kind that tells you what your money is actually doing while it sits in a bank, or what a loan is actually going to cost you by the time you’ve paid it off. The State Bank of Pakistan’s National Financial Education Roadmap, running 2025 to 2029, aims to reach 50 million Pakistanis with formal financial education by 2028. It’s a serious effort, and it’s aimed mostly at adults who are already deep into financial habits that are hard to unlearn.

You’re in a better position than almost anyone that roadmap will reach, because you’re starting before the habits have formed at all.
