It is a practical guide to preparation, body language, vocal pacing and handling questions, for students who dread speaking in front of a class.

Chapter 1: Nervous Is Normal

A Harvard survey once found that 54 percent of adults fear public speaking more than they fear death. Read that twice. More than half the room would rather the plane go down than give the toast.

If your heart races before you speak, you’re not broken and you’re not unusually weak-willed. You’re doing exactly what almost every human brain does when it’s about to be watched and judged by a group of people, a scenario your nervous system still treats as a genuine threat, the same circuitry that once existed to warn you about predators. Racing heart, sweaty palms, dry mouth. All of it is your body preparing you to run from danger that, in this specific case, is just an audience waiting for you to start talking.

Here’s the detail that actually helps: the physical symptoms of nervousness and the physical symptoms of excitement are identical. Same racing heart, same adrenaline. The only thing that changes is the label your brain attaches to the sensation. Tell yourself “I’m nervous” and the feeling works against you. Tell yourself “I’m excited” and the exact same physical state starts working for you instead. Try saying it out loud, right before you walk up: “I’m excited about this.” Nothing in your body changes. What you do with it does.
