The Solution
ECAT Solution: Your 6-Month Plan for the Engineering Entry Test
Last checked: 14 October 2026, against UET Lahore’s announcement of the ECAT 2026 first attempt (as republished by NFC-IET Multan). Dates for the next cycle had not been checked here yet, so confirm everything on admission.uet.edu.pk. Read the ECAT challenge page first for the format.
What you are preparing for: a computer-based test of 100 minutes with no negative marking, taken in one of four subject combinations, each including English. Prep sites report about 100 questions, with roughly 30 each in the three main subjects and 10 in English; confirm the exact pattern in UET’s notice. Your ECAT result is combined with your Matric and FSc marks for merit, so keep your FSc marks strong too.
This plan assumes about six months from a decent FSc foundation. Adjust the weekly hours to your school schedule; steady daily work beats a few exhausting weeks.
Month 1: Foundation and gaps
Revise the whole FSc syllabus for your combination and note your weak chapters. Pick your subject combination early and check that the programme you want accepts it. Make one folder per subject with formula sheets, notes and solved examples.
Month 2: Core topics first
Spend most of your time on the core chapters of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (or Computer Science or Biology, depending on your combination). Ask what is tested again and again in past papers and study those chapters twice. English needs a little time every day: vocabulary, grammar and one short reading passage.
Month 3: Timed MCQ practice
Practise MCQs daily in every subject, with a timer. For each question write down why the wrong options are wrong. Keep a mistake notebook and review it every weekend. Practise on a computer, because the real test is computer-based.
Month 4: Fix your weakest subject
Find your weakest subject and give it extra time every day. Take your first full-length timed mock, score it straight away, and sort every mistake into a concept gap, a careless error or time pressure. Then take one mock a week.
Month 5: Mock test month
Take two full mocks a week and spend as long reviewing each as you spent taking it. Practise the exam-day routine: reading the screen, moving between questions and using the whole 100 minutes. There is no negative marking in the 2026 announcement, so practise answering every question.
Month 6: Final polish
Taper down. Weeks 1 and 2: a mock every few days and light review. Week 3: protect your sleep and keep a calm routine. Week 4: light revision only. Attend the orientation session if one is offered, and check your admit card, photo ID and centre in advance.
Exam day tactics
Aim to finish a first pass in about 70 minutes, answering the questions you are sure of first. Mark the hard ones and return to them. Keep the last 10 minutes to check marked questions. Do not freeze on one problem: you have about one minute per question.
Setting your target
Because ECAT is one part of merit, set your target from the closing merit of the programme you want in recent years, then work backwards: what FSc and Matric marks do you already have, and what ECAT score do you need to reach that merit? Check UET’s formula for your session before you calculate.

FAQ: ECAT preparation
Q: Is six months really needed?
A: It depends on your starting point. Six months is a comfortable plan for a student with a decent FSc foundation; a weak foundation needs more.
Q: Can I balance ECAT with school?
A: Yes, with a steady daily routine. ECAT usually becomes the priority in the last two months.
Q: How many mocks should I take?
A: At least one a week in months 3 to 5, and two a week in month 5.
Q: Which topics matter most?
A: The core chapters that appear repeatedly in past papers for your subject combination. Check recent papers rather than guessing.
