Chapter 1: Grades Get You In the Room. Communication Determines What Happens There.
Knowledge and grades open doors: an interview, an admission offer, a first meeting. What happens after the door opens is a separate skill, and it’s the one that actually determines most outcomes from that point forward: whether the interviewer understands what you’re capable of, whether a group project runs smoothly or falls apart, whether a disagreement gets resolved or just gets louder.
This matters concretely for the kinds of things students actually do. A LUMUN round is pure communication under pressure. A group project succeeds or fails largely on how well four or five people actually talk to each other, not on how smart any one of them individually is. A presentation with excellent content and confusing delivery scores worse than mediocre content delivered clearly, more often than people expect.
None of this replaces having something worth saying. It determines whether what you have to say actually reaches anyone.
