PECTAA runs Punjab's Grade 8 board exam for government-school students. As reported in January 2026 it covers Urdu, English, Mathematics and Social Studies, and private schools were exempt. The 2027 date sheet had not been published when checked. Last checked 16 October 2026.

The Challenge

Punjab’s Grade 8 board exam: what is confirmed and what is not

Last checked: 16 October 2026, against The Express Tribune report of 8 January 2026 on the PECTAA guidelines and ProPakistani’s report of 1 June 2026 on registration. I found no published 2027 date sheet. Treat everything about 2027 as unconfirmed until PECTAA or the Punjab School Education Department issues a notification.

What the January 2026 guidelines said

  • Who conducts it: the Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), replacing the Punjab Examination Authority, which used to run Grade 5 and 8 board exams
  • Why it is news: Grade 8 board exams were discontinued five years earlier and were reintroduced in 2026
  • Grade 5: not included in the board system at that time
  • Private schools: exempted after private school organisations refused to include their students, so only government-school students appeared
  • Subjects: Urdu, English, Mathematics and Social Studies
  • Centres: separate centres for boys and girls, and no more than eight kilometres between a school and its centre
  • Timing: the 2026 exams were expected to start on 3 March

Registration for the 2026-27 exam

ProPakistani reported that PECTAA began registering Grade 8 students for the Annual Examination 2026-27 through its Item Bank System (IBS) on 25 May 2026, continuing until 8 July 2026. Public schools were directed to register their students with the school’s official login. Heads of institutions must make sure the date of birth matches official records, and age corrections follow PECTAA rules. In practice, registration is done by the school, so parents should confirm with the school head that their child is registered.

What is still unclear

  1. The 2027 date sheet. I found none.
  2. The subject list. The Tribune named four subjects. Some unofficial sites list a different set for 2027, so confirm with your school and the PECTAA notification.
  3. Private schools. A June 2026 ProPakistani report said Punjab was considering bringing private schools under the system. I found no confirmed decision.

Why it is hard

  1. Students and teachers have few past papers, because the exam was gone for years.
  2. Information online is mixed, and unofficial pages that look official copy each other.
  3. A wrong date of birth or subject entry on the registration form is the head’s responsibility and can be slow to correct.

Common mistakes

Believing a result or date-sheet website just because its name contains “PECTAA”. Waiting for the date sheet before starting. Skipping Social Studies because it feels easy. Not checking the roll number slip and centre.
