The Challenge

SAT Challenge: One Test for Universities Abroad and in Pakistan

Quick answer: The SAT is a digital test of 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes, scored from 400 to 1600. For students outside the United States it costs $68 plus a $43 international fee. Colleges in the US use it, and in Pakistan IBA Karachi and NUST accept SAT scores for some programmes, so one good sitting can serve several applications.

Last checked: 14 October 2026, against College Board’s SAT structure, dates and international fee pages and the NUST and IBA admission pages. Dates and fees change, so confirm them on College Board before you register.

SAT at a glance

  • Format: taken on a computer or tablet in College Board’s Bluebook app, at a test centre.
  • Sections: Reading and Writing, then Math, with a 10-minute break between them.
  • Modules: each section has two equal-length modules. The first module is a broad mix of easy, medium and hard questions, and how you do on it makes the second module easier or harder.
  • Total time: 134 minutes of testing, which is 2 hours 14 minutes.
  • Score: each section is scored from 200 to 800, for a total of 400 to 1600.
Section Questions Time Time per question (about)
Reading and Writing 54 64 minutes (two 32-minute modules) 1.2 minutes
Math 44 70 minutes (two 35-minute modules) 1.6 minutes
Total 98 134 minutes

Most questions are multiple choice, but some Math questions ask you to type the answer.

Test dates (2026-27) and costs

Test date Registration deadline
7 November 2026 23 October 2026
5 December 2026 20 November 2026
6 March 2027 19 February 2027
1 May 2027 16 April 2027
5 June 2027 21 May 2027
  • Registration fee: $68, plus a $43 international fee.
  • Late registration: $38 extra, between the regular deadline and the late deadline.
  • Change test centre: $34. Cancelling costs $34, or $44 after the change deadline.
  • Extra score reports: your first four reports are free if you order them within 9 days of the test; after that each extra report costs $15.

The 3 October 2026 date has passed. College Board also lists anticipated 2027-28 dates, starting 28 August 2027.

Where Pakistani universities use the SAT

  • IBA Karachi: students can use SAT results instead of the IBA aptitude test for programmes such as BBA, BSCS and BS Economics. IBA says there is no minimum SAT score for exemption, direct admission or an interview is not guaranteed, and only the top SAT scorers are called. In Round 1 of Fall 2026, the SAT cut-off for one list was 600 in Math, 600 in English and 1460 in total.
  • NUST: the ACT/SAT route is for programmes such as Business Studies, Social Sciences and LLB, which ask for at least 550 in each SAT subject (or an ACT composite of 25). NUST’s engineering and computing programmes ask for ACT scores on this route, not SAT. NUST’s SAT code is 2790, scores are valid for 2 years, and for Fall 2027 the ACT/SAT route opens on 20 April 2027 and closes on 25 July 2027. NUST merit for this route counts the SAT as 75%, Matric 10% and HSSC 15%.

Always check each university’s own page for the current year, because cut-offs and rules change.

Why the SAT is a challenge

  1. It adapts. A weak first module in a section limits how high the second can take you.
  2. Short passages, precise questions. Reading and Writing questions are tight and give little room to guess from context.
  3. Cost in dollars. A retake costs the whole fee again.
  4. Different from FSc. The Math is mostly algebra, data and geometry applied to problems, and the English is about evidence and grammar, not literature.

Common SAT mistakes

Registering before a practice test. Practising on paper instead of in Bluebook. Ignoring the second module. Spending too long on one hard Math question. Leaving questions blank. Not sending score reports to the right universities.

FAQ: SAT

Q: Is the SAT paper-based?
A: No. It is taken on a device in the Bluebook app at a test centre.

Q: What is a good SAT score?
A: It depends on the university. Check each one’s published range or cut-off, and treat past cut-offs as a guide, not a promise.

Q: Do I need the SAT for IBA or NUST?
A: No. IBA and NUST both run their own tests. The SAT is an alternative route for some programmes.

Q: How many times can I take it?
A: College Board allows you to register for any date, subject to its rules. Many students sit it more than once and send their best result where the university allows it.
