NUST NET Challenge: How the NUST Entry Test Works
Synopsis
NUST runs its own entry test (NET) in four series a year. Merit is 75% NET, 10% Matric and 15% HSSC, and your best score counts. NET Series-1 for 2027 closes 14 November 2026. Last checked 14 October 2026.
The Challenge
NUST NET Challenge: Your Way into NUST
Quick answer: NUST admits undergraduates mainly through its own NUST Entry Test (NET), held in four series each cycle. Your merit is 75% NET, 10% Matric and 15% HSSC (Part 1 or full), and your best NET score counts, so you can sit more than one series. For the 2027 cycle, Series-1 registration runs from 4 October to 14 November 2026.
Last checked: 14 October 2026, against NUST’s undergraduate admission portal and its pages on NET weightings and merit criteria. NUST marks its schedule as tentative, so confirm every date on ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk.
NET 2027 schedule (tentative, as published by NUST)

- Computer-based sessions: morning 9:00 to 12:00 or afternoon 2:00 to 5:00.
- Attempts: you can appear more than once and your best score is used, but only one attempt per series for a particular discipline.
Which NET paper do you sit?
| Paper | Weightings | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| NET-Engineering | Mathematics 50%, Physics 30%, English 20% | Engineering, computing, and some science programmes |
| NET-Applied Sciences | Biology 50%, Chemistry 30%, English 20% | Pre-medical background, applied science programmes |
| NET-Business Studies and Social Sciences | Quantitative Mathematics 50%, English 50% | BBA, Economics, Psychology, Accounting and Finance, LLB and other programmes |
| NET-Architecture | Design Aptitude 50%, Mathematics 30%, English 20% | Architecture and Industrial Design |
| NET-Natural Sciences | Mathematics 50%, English 50% | BS Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry for students outside the standard streams |
Pre-medical students who want engineering programmes without taking additional Mathematics must clear NUST’s condensed 8-week Mathematics course before admission. NUST’s weightings page gives percentages, not a published question count, so use NUST’s sample test to see the real paper.
How NUST merit works
- NET route: NET 75%, SSC (Matric) or O Level 10%, HSSC Part 1, HSSC, A Level or DAE 15%.
- ACT/SAT route: the same 75/10/15 split for national seats, using the ACT or SAT score instead of NET. For international seats the ACT or SAT counts for 100%.
- Minimum marks: you need more than 60% in SSC and HSSC or equivalent to be eligible.
Why NET is a challenge
- Mathematics is half the engineering paper. Weak Maths is hard to rescue.
- Multiple series add pressure. Each series competes with your school exams.
- Fixed seats. NUST fills places from a merit list that changes every year.
- Different papers. The wrong paper for your background can block a programme.
Common NET mistakes
Registering for the wrong paper. Missing the registration window. Studying only past papers without concepts. Treating Series-1 as a throwaway. Using an unofficial prep service that claims to be linked to NUST.
NUST says it does not run or endorse entry test preparation activities, and warns candidates against organisations that claim an association with it.

FAQ: NUST NET
Q: Can I take NET more than once?
A: Yes. NUST uses your best score, but only one attempt per series for a given discipline.
Q: Is NET the same as ECAT?
A: No. ECAT is UET Lahore’s test. NUST runs its own NET, and each university decides which tests it accepts.
Q: Can pre-medical students apply for engineering?
A: Yes, with conditions. NUST’s page explains the Mathematics requirement, including the 8-week condensed course.
Q: Can I use the SAT instead of NET?
A: For some programmes, yes, within NUST’s ACT/SAT route and its minimum scores. NUST’s engineering and computing programmes ask for ACT scores on that route.
